EFS workshop scheduled on Tuesday July 19th 2011

14:15-15:00 + 15:15 - 16:00 1F R102 - 2F R201 W:Eco Friendly Schools Project

Dear colleagues,

During the coming iEARN Conference in Taiwan Bob, Maurits and two students from Canisius will be hosting a workshop about our EFS-project. It is our intention to present as much material as possible to illustrate the results of the project. This material could be implementations of ideas of other schools, extra conclusions, or advices you discovered after the closing of the project.

We really like to show your material. Thank you!

Kind regards,

Maurits Kamman

Hello,

We are Tess Roelofs and Marlou Snijders and will be visiting the iEarn Conference and Youth Summit in Kaoshiung, Taiwan.

We are very excited to come and we can't wait anynore.

We are both 16 years of age, we live in the same village. It's called Tubbergen and is located in the east of Holland.

We love meeting new people and other cultures so we think that our trip to Taiwan will be a great success!

We're looking forward meeting the students from the other countries that attend the Youth Summit.

At this moment we are preparing a part of the workshop we are going to give. We have found some ecofriendy solutions for our school. These will be put online asap. If you have hints for us for the workshop, please tell us.

We're sure that this will be an unforgettable experience.

Best wishes!!!

Tess and Marlou

Solutions at Canisius

We seperate paper from all the other garbage at our school.  Once in a few weeks all the paper gets collected and recycled to new paper which people use again.

In every break, after the bell ringed at our school, the lights turn automatically off. This is to save energy and so I's good for the environment too.

In this short film clip you can see the lights turning off in the 12pm break.

Workshop part from Marlou:

Introduction

My name is Marlou Snijders, I’m 16 years of age and I’m a student at St. Canisius in Almelo, The Netherlands. I live in Tubbergen, that’s a small village in the east of Holland. In my spare time I like to sing, play the guitar or going out with my friends. Because we attended to extra English lessons at our school, we could join this project.

Opinion about answers from other schools.

We were asked to give our opinion on a question a certain school asked and on the answers given by other schools.

I thought the question from EFS 10 - Fenghsin Senior High School and the answers schools gave on this one were very good. (Show page.)  The question is as follows: How do you( adminstrator, class, and students, him/herself) reuse the used paper or textbooks in campus ?

They asked this question on the occasion of trees being cut down, only to make paper out of the wood. This school wanted to know how other schools in the world reuse the used material. This question really gets to me because it’s an important issue in the world and there certainly are other ways to use the same amount of paper as we do know, but cut less trees.

This school also added two sub questions where they asked how many text/workbooks we use in one semester and they asked us to tell about activities or campaigns in our school to reduce the amount of paper we use.

They added some pictures to show the weight of their books in one semester as you can see here.

Then we get to the answers other schools gave on this question.  At first the answer from EFS1 Redstone Public School from Ontario, Canada. They told us that they waste and have to replace a lot of books per school  year, but that they reuse textbooks, novels and paper. They can reuse textbooks because all books come with a hardcover and all pages are covered with a special material causing it to be extra durable.

I thought that this solution is a very effective one. If everyone reuses paper as many as possible, the less trees have to be cut down so the environment won’t be damaged as much as she is now. Trees produce oxygen and so are a great part of our lives and the environment. They’re too important for just being cut down.

Solutions at our school

We thought of some possible solutions to help the environment at our school. We already use some of them like:

-       separate paper from the other garbage, the paper gets collected every once in a while and will be recycled so that it can be used again. (picture)

-      In every break the lights in every classroom automatically turn off, this so we save energy  at our school and it’s good for the environment.

Another good possible solution is to collect empty (plastic) bottles and reuse them again. In that way we don’t waste too much plastic.

(Introduction)

Hi everyone,

I’m Tess Roelofs and I’m 16 years old. I’m a student at the St. Canisius school in Almelo that’s in the east of Holland. I also live in Tubbergen quite near to Marlou. In my free time I play Basketball and I like to go out during the weekend.

I also worked at the Eco Friendly Schools project. I thought it was an interesting project, because we got in contact with many different nationalities. Everyone looked from their point of view and that’s what made the project interesting too.

(Our question)

The question that we asked to the rest of the schools was:
In what way can you make more efficient use of nature in your school, so that your school save more energy?

A lot of schools came up with the answer that we have to use solar panels and windmills. In the Netherlands there is not much sun. If you place for example solar panels on the roof of the school, we guess that it is not efficient because solar panels are really expensive. The idea of windmills is not achievable. Firstly, wind mills are expensive. Secondly, most of the times schools are in areas with many buildings. Windmills need a lot of space and that is not available in those areas. I thought the answer of the Libanon school was very surprising. They thought about energy steps. The energy that is generated by the stairs is enough for 5 watt at a tile. In school is the possibility to make panels on the stairs for generating energy.

(Contact with Beemster)

Another solution that we found is that we use the expertise of a company to become more eco-friendly. The company Beemster kaas is a cheese company and is one of the most eco-friendly companies of the Netherlands.
