EFS 7 - Elde College

Question:
At Elde College we don't do that much as students and teachers about creating a "green" school.
We took small steps with a computer science project. Awareness is minimum, it all comes down to taking initiative.
We thought up that our first step is to create awareness by everybody. Our question is maybe a bit different than all the other ones. We would like to create a global "green" flash mob.
Our question is: Will you create a global "green" flash mob together with us to increase awareness for "green schools"?

Details about how and when will follow; we will provide the songs, steps, moves.
You should answer our question by sharing a video of your green awareness flash mob in your school.

Here is an example of a flashmob:

Answer from EFS1

We will create a “green” flash mob together to increase awareness for “green” schools. Here is our idea: we will play music over the speakers when the bell rings signalling lunch. The song that will be played is called “big yellow taxi”(the song effects the environment). There will be scrap paper spread on the floor throughout the hallway. While the music is playing we will be picking up the paper on the floor and hopeful other students will as well. Last but not least, we also hope that together, we can bring awareness for “green” schools to the world.

What is a flash mob?

A flash mob is a random action started by anybodythatcatches on. The first flash mob originated in New York, Manhattan in May 2003.  Of all things, it was a pillow fight. It was unsuccessful but the one that followed on June 3, 2003, in the department store known as Macy's, was very successful. A flash mob is a random act performed by a single person in a pubic place. This random act should catch on and at least some people in the crowd should join willingly without suggestion. Flash mobs can be a way to bring awareness towards a specific topic or simply to have fun. Our ECO flash mob experiment will use signs to try to see if random people will get involved by turning off their cars, or by having other people join the group waving the signs at motorists.

The following is our research on idling as an ECO issue and our video of our flash mob attempts.

What is idling?

Idle is a term which generally refers to a lack of motion and energy.

Idling is when a vehicle’s engine is running when it is parked or not in use. Marketing research found that the most common reasons for engine idling are:

  • ·                     warming up the car
  • ·                     waiting for someone
  • ·                     doing an errand (task)

Every two minutes of idling can waste a mile of gas. The research states that an average person idles their car 5 to 10 min a day.

What does idling do to our environment?

Leaving your car on can cause many bad things to happen in the future. Not only does idling pollute the air, it also wastes our limited supply of gas. Also with all the tons of car and trucks around the world, the slowly increasing carbon monoxide will pollute our atmosphere. With the overflowing carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gases will gradually increase and the earth will promptly warm up the atmosphere, leaving us to suffer without food and water. If we stop idling, we can cut down on carbon dioxide and slow down global warming.

What can we do to bring awareness to idling?

Many Canadians are not aware of idling, and its effects. One small thing we can do to change that is by talking to our friends and family. It may seem like such a small thing to do, but it can make a huge difference. Just take a moment or two when driving with them to talk about idling and how it’s very harmful to the earth, their money, and how they can limit the time the car is idling.

Many global events such as natural disasters which are caused by soil erosion, seismic activity, air pressure and ocean currents can prevent the world to go green. Other activities such as pollution, volcanoes, and global warming can also interrupt the process of going green. Participating in creating a global green flash mob would be a good idea to increase the awareness for green schools.

Many things can be done to save green in the world.  One way is by saving energy. For example, you can installcompact fluorescent light bulbs. Another way can be by saving water. For instance, one can take shorter showers, or drought-tolerant native plants can be planted in your garden. A final way to save green is by using less gas.  For example, a person can walk to his or her destination.

A lot of activities can be done to catch the attention or increase the awareness for global green. Commercials on international television channels can be one way in catching people's attention to go green. Another way can be by participating in the waste management programs taking place in schools. Furthermore, a demonstration on achieving the goal of global green. For instance, people participating in the demonstration can hold signs saying go green, or can create songs and plays about global green, or can present videos about the effects of not going green.

To conclude if people become aware of global green and try to achieve the goal of going green, as a result we will have a healthy and safe environment in which lives of human beings will be protected. It will be an honor for me to participate in creating a global green flash mob.

Here is an example of a small mob like/protest we did to celebrate earth day in collaboration with www.350.org

Yes, I would like to create a global “green” flash mob with you since, If we create a global ’’green’ ’that means keeping our environment clean and our  healthy future of our planet depends on the choices we make today, and requires the participation of every person, every  community, and every country. The truth is our planet is in serious trouble. Scientists have estimated that in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change we must have greenhouse gas emissions under control by 2015. These problems are no longer just issues for future generations, we are that generation. In fact, it had been predicted that the year 2010 will be a record year for ice loss in the Arctic, Antarctic and Greenland Ice Sheets; a record year for damage from hurricanes in the Atlantic and typhoons in the Pacific; and a record year for high temperatures around the world and this is happening in fact.

If enough people continue to feel it is important to keep the environment clean, we can all make a difference together. Just imagine what would have happened if past generations did not realize the impact of the damage they were doing to the environment and change their ways. Where would we all be today? What would our future look like? We are starting from our school, teachers and students together to achieve this… but we know that alone can do nothing if no attention was given to our community for understanding the impacts on the future environment and consequently the generations.

This was our solution:

Last Friday, 15 April, we organized an activity concerning sustainability. We arranged a flashmob in a supermarket, called Albert Heijn, which is situated just around the corner of our school. The managing director was very enthusiatic about the idea and we handed him a letter which explained the activity during the flashmob. After wards we had information about environmental problems.

Here is a link about how we had done the flashmob:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RODr0Fg8pNc

The class liked  our idea and we advised them to wear a green T-shirt during the flashmob. The whole class had great fun! First we ask permission from the AH so we wrote a letter. The AH was ok with that!

So the big day arrived and the whole class went to AH. In the shop we put somewhere a waste paper basket and in front of the waste paper basket we put a wad of paper.     Then finally there was a woman who pick up the wad of paper and trow it in the trash! Whole the AH went crazy! There was a huge Applause and everyone was showed a green T-shirt! Then the whole class invited people to come over to our school. That was a big succes!!!

In our school we made a stand in a classroom. A lot of people  came and they listened to us and hopefully this will make a diffrence. We told them about the sockets and about the lights in house. And how much they can save money. This is our information that we have presented to the people, it is in Dutch.

This was the lady who throw the wad of paper into the trashbin!

Answer from EFS12

This is the first time that we know flash mob. We looked for information on the Internet to know more about it. As we found that flash mob is a group of people suddenly performing in a public place to have an usual act for a certain purpose, we have a feeling—we’ll have a difficulty to invite people to join our flash mob. And when we started to plan the activity, what we worried came true. We talk to our classmates and friends about our activity, but students are too shy. Nobody wanted to join us! They even asked if they could wear masks and hats to cover their faces! That made us feel we don't want a flash mob, too!

However, we encouraged ourselves—just do it! We spent several periods of nap time discussing how to do the flash mob. We finally decided to use a march that our school broadcasts at the cleaning time because the music may be able to let people know what we are doing about. And our topic was recycling. We  danced on the hall. At school, we do recycling at the cleaning time, so lots of students will walk through the hall to the recycling collection place. We danced with the recycled plastic bottles.Maybe this flash mob is not successful, but it made us to think in what way we can create awareness at our school.

@EFS9 although it's only a small flash mob the concept is good, but we actually want to blow things a bit up and emphasize more on green
