EFS 12 - Jhengsin Junior High School

Question:

  1. What can you do to reduce, reuse and recycle food waste at home or at school? Please think of your creative ways. Describe what you do and how you do it with photos.

In our garbage can, much of the waste can be reused and recycled. In my class, we use fruit waste to make eco-friendly cleaning liquid. It is a simple and useful way to protect the earth and the health. To DIY the cleaner, you need to prepare black sugar, fruit waste, water, and a plastic bottle.  All kinds of fruit peels can be used. Our school lunch includes fruit, so it is easy for us to collect fruit peels. Then follow the steps.

First, put three cups of fruit waste in the bottle.

Second, put one cup of black sugar.

Finally, add ten cups of water.

Mix all materials well and close the lid. Leave the bottle in a dry place for at least three months. In the first month, you need to open the lid to let the gas out. At last, you will get the brown cleaning liquid. At the school, we can use it to wash eating utensils instead of using chemical cleaners. This is the special way we recycle and reuse fruit waste. However, there must be more than one way. What can you do to reduce, reuse and recycle food waste at home or at school? Please think of your creative ways. Describe what you do and how you do it with photos.

We have found many interesting ways we could reuse, recycle and reduce waste in our school.  By doing the following things you could easily save the environment by not having so much waste.

We could place some composting buckets around the school for people to put their unused food waste and compostable items in and then use those to add fresh nutrients to the soil in our school yard and trees around us.

Our soil has a lot of sand so many trees don’t live well and this new rich soil will help them to do so.

We could encourage the students in our school to bring only the amount of food they need to eat that day that way extra food doesn’t get wasted in garbage. We can encourage this by having a morning announcement saying this in creative ways.

Here are some of the many ways to reduce, reuse, and recylcle in your school or at home.

Now that you have a few good ways to reduce, reuse and recycle food waste at school we will now tell you some ways to reduce, reuse and recycle at home starting with reducing food waste at home.

Our land fills are filling up with food we could be composted. We need to start to pick up our slack.

One easy way to reduce food waste is to compost your food in a bin with a lid and when the bin is full put the scrapes a remote area in your backyard and when the scrapes have broken down you can use the soil to put in your garden so your plants and flowers grow healthier.

Another way to reduce food waste is to serve smaller portions to children because often small children can not finish there meals so they usually resulting in food waste.  if the children were to be served smaller portions they could finish the meal and not have any food waste. This portion is too large for a small child.

If you want to reduce food waste every time you go shopping you should take out all the old food and put the new food in the back and the old food up front so the food doesn't spoil and you don't need to throw it away.

Make sure you are putting items where they need to be put like not putting things in the refrigerator that don’t need to be there or leaving open packs of things that should be in  refrigerator and leaving things in the pantry.

Another way to reduce food waste is when you go shopping take a list and stick to it because most people go to the grocery store and buy what ever they feel like eating at the time.  but once they are home the food is put away and is never seen again and eventually goes bad. So remember to stick to your shopping list.

How to Compost Food Waste by making a Compost pile!

We have a green bin program in our town, where we can easily place all our food waste into one green bin and a man from a truck dumps the waste for it to be recycled. But there is one additional method we could do to recycle food waste. You could try creating a compost pile, where you could make good use of the waste to the animals AND decrease the amount of fuel from the truck that carries our food waste! This method is very similar to our green bin program in our town (Richmond Hill) and is very simple to do.

Materials required!

-         A location that you can use (WITH PERMISSION) to place the food waste. Keep in mind that the location should be outside because the animals are eating the food waste and the smell may not be the most “pleasant” odour that you shouldn’t have in the indoor buildings….

-         Your food waste (no meat or dairy products please!)

-         One container (or more, if you want to separate your food waste)

Step #1: Gather all your food waste into a bin or a container. Make sure the bin that is capable of carrying the waste and you don’t mind the bin/container will be full of food waste.

Having a waste bin to carry food waste is a good idea.

Step #2: Once the bin is full of food waste, empty the bin onto the location you chose in step #1.

(OPTIONAL) Instead of placing the compost on top of the location you could bury it before you plant your new plant.

Please note that since you are emptying your food waste into the outdoors, animals and bugs are likely to eat them and make use of the food waste. Also, if you live near the area where you created a compost pile; please note the smell that may be produced by the pile.

Helpful ideas with your compost pile:

-         Do you neighbours also have food waste? Maybe you could take their food waste and combine it with your pile!

     -   You have a personal garden? Here’s an idea: create a compost pile on your garden!

Lastly we have found some cool ways to reuse your food waste and help our environment.

How to reuse food waste:

This world is getting destroyed because of all the food waste and landfills that we have and a very important part of decreasing our landfills, food waste etc is to reuse our items. We reuse a lot of things like paper, silver ware, water bottles, but why not the food we waste? In this society we need to step up and share ways on how to reuse food waste.

1.One way to reuse food waste is to give your food waste to your local farm so that they can use it for the pigsties, and that helps the environment because you aren’t just throwing away your compost but you giving it to another cause and your reusing the food waste.

2. Another way to reuse your food waste is to make soil out of the food waste. There is food waste in soil because it conditions the soil. You can also just mix your compost with the soil in your garden and this allows underground creatures such as worms to eat.

3. You can also compost your tea bags and that makes wonderful compost for the garden.

4. Also serve food to only how much you eat because many people just waste food. When you have so much food on plate and you cannot eat it you can’t put it back. Why don’t you just put little serving of food in your plate and you can always go back and get more if you need it.

Hopefully these neat ways helped you to reduce, reuse and recycle food waste at school as well as your home.

In our community, we produce about 1000 tonnes of waste per week. 24% of that is garbage, 26% is recycling, and 29% is compost (food waste), and 10% is yard waste. Here in Richmond Hill, recyclables and compost is picked up every Wednesday, and garbage is picked up every other Wednesday. The volume of the average green bin here is about 53 985 cm3, and the volume of the average recycling bins are 55 890 cm3.

Here are some pictures of the garbage pickup in our community:

In Toronto, recyclables are picked up every second week, and garbage is also picked up every second week when the recycling is not picked up. Also, there the green bin is picked up every week. What day the pick up is depends on where you live in Toronto, for it is a very big city.

Like we mentioned before, we have green bins in our homes so that the things we put in there don’t go to landfills. However, we can’t just put anything in our green bins. A list of what we can put in our green bins is below.

What goes in the Green Bin?

  • Fruits, vegetable scraps
  • Meat, shellfish, fish products
  • Pasta, bread, cereal
  • Dairy products, egg shells
  • Coffee grounds, filters, tea bags
  • Soiled paper towels, tissues
  • Soiled paper food packaging: fast food paper packaging, ice cream boxes, muffin paper, flour and sugar bags
  • Paper plates
  • Candies, cookies, cake
  • Baking ingredients, herbs, spices
  • Household plants, including soil
  • Diapers, sanitary products
  • Animal waste, bedding (e.g. from bird/hamster cages), kitty litter
  • Pet food

What does NOT go in the Green Bin (these items do not break down and cannot be turned into compost):

  • Plasic containers and packaging
  • Glass
  • Metal
  • Aluminum foil and plates
  • Styrofoam
  • Clothing or textiles
  • Wood, ashes, cigarettes
  • Dryer sheets
  • Plastic wrap
  • Any material that is not organic

We try to reduce, reuse, and recycle food waste by having litter less lunches in our schools. Also, we have “Vermi composting” in our school, which is an eco-friendly and safe way to produce fertilizer and reduce food waste. We use worms (particularly red wigglers) in a plastic bin with bedding made of shredded paper and water. We cut our food waste into small chunks and put it into the worm bin. What happens is, the worms digest our food waste, and turn it into rich soil. In about 5 months of feeding, you’ll end up with a bin of rich soil ready to use on plants. At our school, garbage and recycling are picked up once every week, and no green bin is picked up, but we have our “Vermi composting” to make up for not having green bins at our school. We also have small garbage cans at our school instead of huge ones, which helps us to reduce the amount of waste we put in the garbage. Also, we have a list of what we’re allowed to put in this garbage can and what we can’t.

Interesting !!!

Everybody is very concerned these days with green energy how to reduce the amount of ail need from foreign countries or the amount of fossil fuels we need to burn to create energy but a lot of people forget about thinking of reducing our landfill need as well. Burying our garbage is just us harmful to environnement as burning fossil fuels. Here is an easy way to do your part to reduce the amount of garbage that gets buried in a handful.

Instead of flushing your food waste garbage down you sink via a garbage dispersals, or scraping it into your trash bin ,you are going to recycle it .From now on Schrage your food waste into a Tupperware bowl .you can recycle any food except for bones from steak ,fish or poultry.

Once the Tupperware bowl becomes filled pick a spot in your yard and using your shovel digs a hole about 2 to 3 feet deep. If you have a vegetable or flour garden this works even better you can dig your holes in your garden. You’ll see why in a moment.

Dump the food waste from your Tupperware bowl into the hole you dug in the previous step and fell the hole in with dirk.

Now mark the spot with a stick. You don’t want to dig up this same are within 6 months. What happens now is that worms will find your food waste and eat it the resulting worm dropping create the most nutrients rich sail.

Experiment:

We see that all women like to change their hair color into darken gray. Also, we see that all these new generations prefer to eat potato maybe fried, cooked or grilled. The potatoes for them means a lot and they can’t get rid of it. If all people eat potato, large amount of potato peels will be produced. So, we found an experiment that put these 2 things together in a useful way and designed this experiment to reduce food waste at home:

First, we need the potato peels and water.

Next, we put water in a container and we add for it potato peels.

We keep it to boil for an hour.

Then, we strain it and let it cool.

After that, rinse this to your hair after shampooing and it will gradually darken gray hair, without the use of harsh chemicals.

Many people think of food waste as a benign substance. For food to compost properly, it needs light and air. In the landfill, it has neither. Instead, food devoid of light and air produces methane gas, which contributes to global warming. It is estimated that we throw away a third of the food we buy each week.

- Don't throw food away. Fruit that is just going soft can be made into fruit pies. Vegetables that are starting to wilt can be made into soup, it is still delicious.

- Turn it into garden food. Why we don’t set up a compost bin for fruit and vegetable peelings? In a few months you will get rich, valuable compost for your plants. Just feed it with your scraps, spray over it a layer of special microbes and leave to ferment. The resulting product can be used for plants in the garden.

- Use up your leftovers – take leftovers from dinner to work for lunch. This can save you a bunch of money over buying your lunch every day.

- Donate but don’t let it go to waste. If the food is still in good condition, contact people who are in need and see if they can use it. There are more hungry and needy in our country, so donate extras to those in need.

Reduce

A way of reducing your (plastic) food waste is buying less packed food. You could go to a grocery or butcher, as the packaging there is much less then in supermarket. You could also grow your own vegetables, if you have the time and space. Also, we thought of a perfect way to reduce food waste at school. It happens far too often that students at our school throw away their homemade lunch and instead, buy something from a food machine which in turn is the reason for lots of unnecessary plastic packaging waste. If we could just take out the machines or only put in food with very little, or without packaging, it would save you a lot of waste.

Reuse

A lot of plastic packaging can be reused. For example, you can use platic bottles more then once. Most people throw them away when it’s empty, but you can clean it and reuse it. Also plastic bags for chips or sweets can be reused. Also plastic trays for salad or other vegetables can be used again to store food or left overs. Actually you can use them for a long time, Everytime they can be cleaned and used again. But why does nobody do this?

Recycle

In Holland, a lot of recycling is done already, bij sorting the waste, and put all the plastic in special bags.

Answer from EFS7

In the area where our school is located, food waste is dealt with on different ways. For example at my (Huib van Dijk) place, the animals are fed with food waste; the dog gets what is left over from diner, the chickens get vegetables and our rabbits get lettuce. Beside the food waste they also get normal animal food.

But people who don't have this luxury, get from the community a so called green bin, where they can dump their food waste. Once in the 2 weeks the green bin gets emptied by the community and then they process it to compost.

You could also go to either a farm in the neighbourhood or a petting zoo, to feed the animals with food waste.

What can you do to reduce, reuse and recycle food waste at home or at school?

To reduce food waste, we should prepare a moderate amount of food for every meal. If you do not finish all the dishes, you can store part of them in the fridge and have them finished next time.

To reuse and recycle food waste, we can turn the fruit peel into a deodorant, or a cleaner which can be used to wipe tables, do the dishes, and etc. For vegetable, you can use it to make compost.

In addition to fruit peel and vegetable, you can also reuse the waste oil by changing it into soap. This is the way to do it.

Green Soap

Ingredients:

The waste cooking oil (without awful smell)

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH)

Water

Honey (or sugar)

Tools:

2 pots

Several molds for making soaps

Steps:

1. Put Sodium hydroxide into the water and stir it with a spoon.

  1. Heat the oil to in another pot to about 50 degrees Celsius

   3.   Mix the water and the oil together. Then keep stirring it until it looks mushy.

   4.  When the paste is ready, you could pour a little bit of honey in it.

   5.  After it looks well mixed, you can pour it into the molds you like and seal it up with the cover or cling film.

After a few days it will become hard and it’s time to use it!

Here are the answers we have discussed:

1.   Reduction for unnecessary waste:

In my school, about  1,800 students choose the school lunch offered by school, while 350-400 students choose pre-made lunch boxes, which are prepared by Lunch Food Company.   To prevent the unnecessary waste on lunch paper boxes , we can have students order in advance before 10:00 and then the Lunch Food Company can just deliver the exact number.

2.   One good way to make the best use of the left over.

In Taiwan, many people try their best to reduce the amount of waste to the minimum.   The following is one good way to create the reused value for the left-over.

In Taiwan, people usually order the lunch box when there is an activity outside the house.  Because of difficulty of making sure the exact number of the needed,  there is always the problem of ordering too much.

Our plan is to have one tightly-sealed barrel available, whose faucet is installed on the edge of the barrel bottom.  Then place the ten-centimeter-high of the metal framework with gauze and three centimeters offertile soil with many microorganisms in turn. Then put the  food waste/left over  into the barrel. The generated liquid fertilizer after covering three or four days can be used  water the flowers and beautify our campus.
