EFS 10 - Fenghsin Senior High School

Question:

The forests on earth are decreasing continually. The more paper is consumed , the more trees are going to be felled. It will not only harm the animals living in the forests but also influence the earth’s climate .

In Taiwan , we have a lot of flyers from many cram schools and we have "tons" of test sheets and textbooks. We have been trying to collect all of them and make the best use of  its blank side.  Meanwhile,  from students' viewpoint,  we have too many textbooks , but actually some of them are not fully used, and some are even new when thrown away .  Our team try to come up with a solution to reduce or reuse the paper or textbooks.

Therefore, the major question we would like to ask :

  1. How do you( adminstrator, class, and students, him/herself) reuse the used paper or textbooks in campus ?
    1. Sub-question 1: Please provide the information  to help us understand the amount of textbooks you use for one semester.
    2. Sub-question 2: Please share any activities /campaigns in your school to reduce the  amount of  paper? If not, please share some practical measures from other schools in your country.

(1) A photo with all the textbooks in stacks  per student every semester.

Here we only collect the textbooks, and we also have quite a lot of test sheets and reference books from the teacher, or have more intensive readers.

(2)  A photo with students holding textbooks in their hands, each subject for one student.

In Taiwan, for Grade 11, students need to study 14 subjects at a time as follows:

1. Chinese  2. English  3. Math   4 Physics  5 Chemistry  7 History  8 Geography

9.  Civic Education   10.  Pysical Education  11.  Music   12  National Defense

13. Life and Technolgy   14.

(3)  Please tell us the data:  What is the total weight of all the textbooks?

Data from FHSH:   We put all the textbooks onto the scale, and the total weight is 10 kgs.

In Redstone P.S. we recycle and reuse in many ways. We have done this by reusing textbooks, novels and paper. Reuse of textbooks is possible because all of our textbooks are hardcover and each page has a special coating causing it to be extra heavy and durable. In addition, all of the information and questions we need for an entire school year is included in this textbook so we don’t need to waste paper on different worksheets and workbooks. Textbooks are reused for ten years until they are all replaced. Music, Art, Physical Education and Health do not have textbooks but some have little worksheets.  However Math and French are our only subjects where we have our own copy of the textbook. Therefore by sharing our history, science, and geography textbooks with the other classes in our grade, we save many textbooks from being ordered. Papers are saved through different methods, if it isn’t possible to reuse the paper we already have, then we use recyclable paper. We have a printer that uses only paper that has been recycled already known as the Risa. If it is possible to reuse paper, we have a special bin that contains good paper used on only side- these are called G.O.O.S. paper ( “good on one side paper” since it can be used again). Each class has its individual section of books that are shared among classmates so we don’t have to waste paper on buying the same books. Furthermore, we have a school library where every student is allowed to borrow books to prevent constant purchasing of books.

Here (the picture above) is the amount of text books, workbooks, and binders each student has.

At Redstone P.S. we recycle and reuse in every way possible. As to how we are doing so, we have done so through reuse of textbooks, novels and paper.

We are intrigued by your question about our paper consumption. Everyday, Canada strives to become a more environmentally friendly nation. Even with these efforts, Canada still has flaws. Canada uses six million tonnes of paper, with only one-fourth recycled. Twenty-five million trees must be cut down each year for paper! Trees cannot meet up with our demand of paper. That’s why our school Redstone has become an eco-school and has devised numerous ways to save paper and other resources.

Being an eco-school, we try our best to reduce our paper waste. Despite this, our intermediate division in our school uses about 300 sheets of paper per day. In our grade, we use 5 text books, but we don’t purchase them as they are available at every class during our rotary. The only text book we carry is our math text book. Grade 11’s use 3-4 text books they weigh 3 pounds each per semester!

A technique to reduce textbooks is that we print some of the important pages that we need from the certain textbook on the Riso paper. This way we can save textbooks and be eco-friendly because the Riso paper is paper that is made by recycle paper. Another way to save textbooks is to return textbooks after a year of use. In our school, math textbooks are given out at the beginning of the year, and at the end, after we’ve learnt our material, we give them back. To accomplish this we have to make sure nobody writes, or damages the material. By doing so, lots of paper is saved, because when we go to the next grade we aren’t keeping the textbooks to collect dust, instead they will be reused.

In our school we have a campaign called the “G.O.O.S.” bin, which helps to save paper. The “G.O.O.S.” bin means good on one side. It is a bin where we put sheets of paper that are blank on one side, and have writing on the other side. This is where good on one side derives from. We use “G.O.O.S.” paper for brain storming etc. This allows us to reuse paper that would otherwise be wasted.

Furthermore, in our intermediate division we have a paperless class. In this classroom most of the school work is done on the computers, with the exception of art, health, music, P.E., and French. By having a “paperless” classroom, paper waste is reduced, as well as paper use. To make this classroom effective, we have 30 laptops, stationed around the room. The room is, also equipped with an electric white board (smart board), and projectors. There are applications such as moodle, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint; that are used to do daily school work.

Another way would be to use Riso paper. Before our school used Riso paper all the paper was white which is wasteful. After using Riso paper 50% of white paper the next year compared to previous years. Currently our school uses 400 000 sheets per year on a budget of a whopping $2500. Using Riso paper is more environmentally friendly because it is recycled.

The last way to save paper would be to assign a certain amount of paper to each teacher for a time period. To perform this task, teachers would be given the amount of paper at the beginning of the year. You could also give the amount of paper at the start of each term, or semester. This allows the paper consumption to be controlled, and also allows the school to purchase paper within the budget. Unfortunately, if the classroom utilizes all of the paper there will be no more paper for the classroom to supply its students. This would teach the students to not be wasteful and reuse the resource. Teachers will take as much paper as they need, but there is a limit, which are 3000 sheets of paper per term for each teacher. When our teachers pass the limit, they can borrow from other teachers who haven’t used as much paper. This way the school is not purchasing over their assigned amount. If there is left over paper, our school saves it so the next year they will purchase less and continue to have the same surplus next year.

In conclusion, these were the ways that our school saves paper and textbooks. These are extremely valuable tips to be greener towards paper use. While our tactics may not always work for you, as we live in a different area and climate, we hope that these methods will assist your school to reduce paper.

Answer from EFS3

Forests that decreases continually,  and cutting  trees used to make papers and textbooks are becoming a big problem! what we can do ?

-we can rent books from school or buy old one and waste paper from students   at a low price and reselling it at a profit .this textbooks should be fixed and of good quality and in large quantity and if half of all textbooks could be reused for three or   five years ,this would lead to a vast saving of trees and energy or we can recycled the paper  through  paper mills and returns to school as new textbooks (and that what we do in our school to save the environment) and many people suggested that renting textbooks could be effective by providing an easily-implemented and energy-saving alternative.

So by using and reusing   the textbooks, we can do our part to reduce paper, supply and help save our environment

Of course that this cyclical use of textbooks    won`t be popular due the consumers        attitudes    . A premise of free consumption is that everybody likes to buy new books that feel good .parents often do not consider the environmental problem ,labeling it an issue for the government  to sort out , but it isn`t a problem if we try ;just to save our dear earth because if we all try ,we find the better solution .

Saving paper in school is a good way to help save the environment. Schools are an excellent place to take steps to help save our natural resources, as it often will bring in the passion of students, the support of teachers, staff, and community.

In our school, we follow some plans that reduce paper wasting and reduce their amount. At the end of each term, we collect and weigh the classroom waste papers and books and see whether the amount used/wasted has been reduces or not after recycling and management.

Some strategies can be followed to reduce the amount of used papers and recycle the used textbooks in the school:

- Some students own laptops, they can use it instead of paper notes. Use computers whenever possible. Mail the documents rather than printing them out.

- Use hand dryers instead of paper towels but this can be a waste of electric energy but it is less impact on environment than wasting papers and losing trees.

- Give unused textbooks to students who are in need and can't buy one.

- Use recycled paper whenever possible. If you have papers you don't need any more, take it to a recycling center.

- Use both sides of notebook paper. Avoid leaving white spaces as much as you can.

- Art teachers can guide you on how to re-use paper creatively, by making new designs so that he/she raises his/her awareness.

- Don't do silly things with paper, like making planes, throwing it in your classmates' heads.

- Re-use used computer paper: take the paper in the recycling bin next to the printer, align the paper so all the blank sides are on one direction, and you just re-used a lot of paper that would be offered to teachers as scratch papers.

- Educate students on ways to conserve and reuse papers.

- Get Students Involved. Student environmental clubs are very popular, and can help make the school community more ecology-savvy.

- Recycle clean but used paper into scratch paper for teachers by using paper cutters for reusing.

- Get Teachers and Staff Involved. Work with them in finding ways to save paper whenever possible.

- Calculate how much paper is thrown out and recycled every day and make recycling plans.

  1. How do you (administrator, class, and students, him/herself) reuse the used paper or textbooks in campus?

We do different things to reuse the amount of paper and textbooks. First of all, we collect all the paper, we don’t use anymore, at one point. The staff from school brings it to a central collecting point in town. After this the paper will be recycled. In future the school doesn’t want the students to write in the workbooks anymore. Instead, they want them to write down their answers in their notebooks. This means that the workbooks can be used several years. The recycling and reusing of paper means that less deforestation has to be done and less harm is done to animals.

    1. Sub-question 1: Please provide the information  to help us understand the amount of textbooks you use for one semester.

The amount of books we use during one semester is 22, this includes textbooks and workbooks. However, we don’t take all the books with us on a school day it depends on the subjects we have that day. This can be different for every student. We have 4 periods during the year and in some periods we have other subjects included.

    1. Sub-question 2: Please share any activities /campaigns in your school to reducthe  amount of  paper? If not, please share some practical measures from other schools in your country.

Next year they want to reuse the workbooks again, that means during this year we can write in our workbooks and next year we can’t do that anymore we have to write down our answers in a notebook. We used to use recycled papers to make notes and do our homework on. Now, we use a lot of computers so that we don’t spill as much paper as before. The last thing we do is separating paper and other garbage from each other, the paper is collected at a central point. After this the paper will be recycled.

This is how heavy our schoolbag is when we only have 6 lessons at

a day.The bag weighs 5 kg. For the pictures, please see the following document.

Introduction

Production of paper for the environment and degrades the natural riches of the earth by the massive exploitation of forests. Use less paper is needed. Cut down on the amount of paper we use, could in many ways:

This are the ideas we find on the internet and we figure out ourselves.

  1. All paper-sided
  2. all-sided paper
  3. Don’t make a school newspaper
  4. Use an iPad or an eReader instead of books.

1. All paper sided printing.

This is about the same idea as below but with printing.

2. All-sided paper describing.

If you want to save a lot af paper in describing you can describe all two sides of an paper. If you dont do this you wil waste the half of the paper.

3. Don’t make a school newspaper idea.

If you do not make school newspaper, you will save a lot of paper. As well  in the printing of the school newspaper as in writing it.

4. The iPad/eReader idea.

Instead of books, you can also use an iPad. If you find that too expensive, you can also buy an eReader is much cheaper. But the advantage of an iPad is that you also can it use it as a calculator, a calendar and iBooks as the iPad 2 can even take pictures for a project or something. The iPad can do much more with Apps from the AppStore. And you also save a lot of paper. Andyousavea lotof treeswithaniPad.

Answer from EFS9

In TCGS, the 11th graders use about 32 books (still increasing) in one semester.

The 11th graders need to study 14 subjects and only 10 subjects have books, but that is still a lot.

After putting all the books on the scale, we surprisingly found that they weighted about 11.8 kilograms! (piles of test sheets are not included)

How to reduce the amount of paper? We always think of this when the new semester start and we have to bring the books home. Here are some ideas that we want to carry out in the future.

  1. Use reprocessed papers-lighter, cheaper, and more eco-friendly

  2. Print on both sides of a paper

  3. Calculate and write drafts in the margin or on waste papers

  4. Use electronic products-laptops and iPads are expensive but you only need one to contain all the subjects.

  5. Share books-some subjects like music and P.E. are common, so we can buy one book for 3-4 students. / the content of some subjects don’t change annually, so we can pass the books to the juniors.

  6. Buy the books you need-if you will never use some textbooks, then you don’t need to buy them. (some of the books in our school always remain clean and new)

  7. hand in homework online- hand in homework through the Internet, so you don’t have to print it out.

  8. Typetset -when you need to print, use the paper more efficiently. Reset the typeset to include more words in a paper.

Answer from EFS12

Our club members come from grads 7 and grade 8. In a semester, grade 7 has 18 text books, one English magazine, and several reference books. The reference books are decided by the teachers, so different classes may use different books. Some have more, and some have fewer. Grade 7 students have 15 subjects: Chinese, English, math, social studies(history, civics, geography), biology, PE, technology, art, performing arts, health education, counseling , music, scout education, home economics.

Grade 8 has at least 15 books for a semester, including both textbooks and workbooks, and also lots of reference books from teachers. Grade 8 students have Chinese, English, math, social science(history, civics, geography) , PE, science, art, performing arts, health education, counseling , music, scout education, home economics. We also have lots of test papers.

The weight of the grade 8 books is three kilograms.

Actually, we don't have a special activity for reducing the amount of paper at school. However, our school knows the importance to reduce waste of paper, so we do something. For example, we reuse and recycle textbooks and reference books. In some subjects like art, music, counseling, health education and PE, we don't need to buy text books. Our school prepares textbooks for us. If there is not a big change in the curriculum, the school doesn't need to buy new books every semester. The textbooks can be used for several years. Reusing textbooks can save a lot of paper. At the beginning of every new semester, our school also collects reference books from teachers. Teachers donate reference books they don’t use again, and then students who need reference books can get them.

Now our school reduces sending paper notices to teachers and students. Instead, they use e-mails and school websites more. It's easier and faster to let everybody know important information and also to avoid a lot of unnecessary usage on paper.

Besides, we start to think of some special ways to reuse paper .The box in the picture is made by paper. It's easy to make. We use it as a little garbage can. In fact, we can come up with more ways to reuse paper. Some guys in our country even use paper to make a house!
