Our school Libanon Lyceum

Our school is located in Rotterdam, a city in a small country called The Netherlands. In The Netherlands are a lot of people living on one square meter. Rotterdam is a harbor-city on the river The Maas. The school is located in the district Kralingen. There are two buildings for almost 1100 students. Our building is built in 1913 and designed by the famous architect Granpré Molière. There are 4 levels: Mavo, Havo, Atheneum and Gymnasium.

Within the levels we have two different learning types: the traditional classes and the world- classes. In the world-class you have to do more projects and you learn to work together. Our class is the World class XL (Gymnasium).

This year is our first year at our school. We all started in September 2010, when we had finished the primary school. So we are in the first class now and you can see that at the number in the name of our class, 1K. In our class we have seventeen students, six boys and eleven girls. Our class is very nice to be in. We have fun together and we all enjoy going to school. Every day we have many lessons and we study for many hours. But we also do other nice and interesting things during school-hours. We make make trips, visit museums, participate in contests and do a lot of projects with a small group of students. For example, we wrote a story about the Ancient Greeks, we made a presentation about ourseleves, we built a shopping mall under the ground (a little one, a model, of course!) and we are working on a play Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Our main courses are: Dutch (our own language), English, French, Latin, Spanish, Chinese, Biology, History, Geography, Drama, Gym and O&O (Research and Development). During the lessons O&O, we try to find solutions for all kind of problems.

Our class is very important to the school, because it is the fist time our school has a class like ours, with childeren who like to learn a lo and work hard. Everyone hopes it will be a succes! For us our class is very important because we all feel at home at enjoy ourselves!

1. This is our information:

Holland it's likely not what you think. Tulips and windmills and girls with wooden shoes everywhere. It is a first world country and neighboring countries are Germany, Belgium . Holland is located near the sea. Therefore we have a maritime climate. Located on the North Sea. The temperature is in summer around 25 degrees Celsius. In the winter it is around -4. Sometimes we are skating on the ice in the rivers. We can do that if it freezes for a while. What I want to make clear is that the Netherlands isn’t only tulips and windmills, it is a normal country that not so separate.

This is the Dutch flag.

Some numbers.

- Population: 16,515,057

- Size 41,526 km ²

- population density 397.7 / km ² (2009).

- Over 18% of the surface consists of water.

- Much of the country and its population is

below sea level.

The Netherlands is often referred to as Holland, although North and South Holland are actually only two of its twelve provinces. The word Dutch is used to refer to the people, the language, and anything pertaining to the Netherlands.

Binnenhof

The binnenhof is the centre of Dutch politics

 NederlandThe dark green is Holland

Most people know the Netherlands from cheese. Tullips Amsterdam wooden shoes are also very famous subjects. People know us also from the WC football (the orange team and Gullit). We ended second, defeated by Spain. We are also very famous from our windmills which we have pumped the water away with. That is one of the reasons that our land is below the sea level. Another reason is that we built a lot of dikes on the side of our land. People know us also from the deltaworks in Zeeland.

Sustainability measures:

In Holland everybody is busy with sustainability. We think that thats because Holland is a country with a lot of residents.

So it’s important to make our environment as sustainable as possible so that we don’t waste any materials or energy.

In Holland a lot of energy is collected by windmills, sunpannels and other alternatives. We also try to find a solution for the CO2, we devide our trash and the government tries to stimulate people to be more conscious, like using energy-efficient lamps and throw our garbage in the trash can instead of on the street. The government tries to influence the people amongs other things through advertising.

In Rotterdam there is a lot of thinking going on about sustainability. Buildings are being build with durable materials and there are investments in sustainable public lighting.
The Rotterdam Climate Initiative knows several smaller and bigger projects, all on the subject of sustainability. For example the water of the Rotterdam river Maas is used to neutralize the carbon oxide (CO2) of the tallest building in the Netherlands.
In our school, the Libanon Lyceum we are involved in several projects on sustainability. Recently we have designed a underground fairtrade shopping mall. At the moment we are trying to make our school more sustainable and how we can optimise the use our energy.

Wow! It's amazing how many different languages you learn at your school. Here in Canada, we take only English and French. It is also very interesting that you have two buildings and so many students.
