Eco Activities - Redstone

Page history last edited by Stephanie Ratti 13 years ago

Redstone Public School's ECO initiative started when our new Vice Principal Ms. Cerullo first arrived to our school. She started this ECO initiative with a little slideshow, then she told the whole school that we were doing two things. First, I will tell you that we are using something called a G.o.o.s (good on one side) bins, these are bins with paper that isn’t completely used in the class, and each piece of G.o.o.s paper has something printed on one side but not the other side of the paper. I will also tell you that the next action of the ECO initiative was decreasing the size of garbage cans in our school. The whole school now has small, red garbage buckets to decrease the amount of garbage in our school. The vice principal used these two actions so we could decrease the amount of pollution, in fact these actions were so ECO friendly, that we won a golden certificate for being the best ECO friendly school.

In our school, we strongly believe in the Golden Garbage Can program. Every day of the week, we make sure our classroom is as eco-friendly as possible. For example, we bring our leftover crusts and crumbs home and toss in our green bins in order to reduce garbage. We also turn off the lights when not in the room to save energy. Finally we divide paper from the bottles in the recycling bins. At the end of each week the caretakers give us an overall grade, usually in between 1 and 4.5 and at the end of each month; the caretaking team totals up the points and awards the top class from each division with a shiny golden garbage can. Sort of our version of the Stanley Cup except we are able to sign our names on it. The Golden Garage Can program is a great way to reward the many classes that have been trying their hardest to be eco-friendly.
